Baode District Fire Shutter Small-Area Installation Case Study

Small-area fire shutter installations have their own challenges in Shenzhen's Baode District, where many buildings are older and space is tight. Here's a case from Heruihua's project files.

The project: A small electronics repair shop in an old commercial building, about 40 square meters. The building's fire safety upgrade required a fire shutter between the shop and the common corridor. Opening size: 2.2 meters wide by 2.5 meters high. The ceiling above the opening was low, with limited headroom for the rolled curtain.

Challenge 1: Headroom. The standard steel fire shutter for this size needed about 400mm above the opening for the rolled curtain and housing. Available headroom was only 320mm. Solution: Used an inorganic fabric fire shutter instead. The curtain rolls to a much smaller diameter. Headroom requirement dropped to 280mm.

Challenge 2: Wall condition. The partition wall was old brick with previous paint and plaster layers. Expansion bolts in old brick are unreliable. Solution: Chemical anchors. Drilled through the plaster into solid brick, injected epoxy, set threaded rods. Much stronger than expansion bolts in this wall condition.

Challenge 3: Power supply. The nearest power source was 8 meters away across a finished ceiling. Running conduit would require cutting access holes and patching. Solution: Used a battery-operated fire shutter control system. The 24V battery handles the descent cycle. An AC charger maintains the battery. The charger was located near the power source and connected with low-voltage wire, which is easier to route.

Challenge 4: The shop was still operating during installation. Couldn't make too much noise or dust. Solution: Pre-assembled as much as possible off-site. Curtain pre-cut to width. Guide rails pre-drilled for anchor positions. The on-site work was minimal: drill anchor holes, mount rails, hang curtain, connect wiring. Done in 3 hours.

Result: Fire shutter passed inspection on the first try. Total cost including materials and installation was within the building management's budget for the fire safety upgrade program.

This case shows that even tight, constrained installations can be done right with the right approach. Don't assume a fire shutter won't fit just because the space is small.
