Fire shutter installation is more demanding than regular door installation. Get these things wrong and the shutter won't pass inspection, or worse, won't work in a fire.
1. Structural Adequacy
Fire shutters are heavy. A steel composite shutter for a 5×3 meter opening can weigh over 500kg. The supporting structure must handle this plus dynamic loads. If the opening is in a partition wall, that wall must also be fire-rated.
2. Headroom Clearance
Above the opening, you need space for the rolled-up curtain. For a 4-meter high steel shutter, allow 500–600mm. For inorganic fabric shutters, about 400mm. Check for pipes, ducts, and cable trays in this zone.
3. Guide Rail Fixing
Rails must stay in place during a fire. Concrete: expansion bolts. Brick: chemical anchors. Steel structure: through-bolts or welded brackets. Rail spacing must be uniform top to bottom — converging or diverging rails cause binding.
4. Shaft Level
An unlevel shaft causes uneven rolling — one side tightens while the other loosens. Use a water level or laser level for shafts longer than 3 meters.
5. Fire Alarm Interface
Wrong polarity on the signal line means the shutter won't respond to alarms. Test the interface before closing up the walls. This is one of the most common points of failure during fire inspections.
6. Fusible Link Installation
The fusible link must be positioned where it will be exposed to heat from a fire below, unobstructed by housing or hardware. The release cable to the brake mechanism must run freely with no sharp bends.
7. Bottom Beam Seal
The bottom beam should contact the floor evenly across the full width when the shutter is closed. Gaps under the beam are smoke paths. Use a threshold or adjust beam height if the floor is uneven.
8. Commissioning
Run the door through at least ten full cycles. Then simulate a fire alarm and confirm correct descent. Document everything. Fire shutters are life safety equipment — install them like it matters.
