Direct answer: CE marking and a North American fire-door certification follow different legal and technical routes. Neither mark automatically converts into the other. For a rolling steel fire door, check the exact product category and test standard: UL Solutions lists rolling steel fire doors (GSVV) under UL 10B, while its UL 10C positive-pressure category covers certain swinging fire doors. On the EU side, a fire or smoke-control door placed on the market under the applicable harmonised specifications can require a Declaration of Performance, CE marking, and notified product-certification-body involvement; calling this route “self-declaration only” is inaccurate.
Compare the evidence, not just the logo
| Question | EU/EEA route | North American project route |
|---|---|---|
| What controls acceptance? | Applicable EU construction-product rules and harmonised product standards | Adopted building/fire code and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) |
| Core documents | Declaration of Performance, CE marking, applicable test/classification and certification records | Current certification/listing for the complete assembly, label, and installation instructions |
| Fire test and classification | EN 1634-1 test evidence and EN classification, where applicable | Product-category-specific standard, for example UL 10B for UL’s rolling steel fire-door category |
| Production oversight | Assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP); fire/smoke compartmentation doors can fall under System 1 with a notified product certification body | Certification body’s follow-up program according to the listing scheme |
| Operator | Check all applicable mechanical and electrical safety requirements | Check operator certification and compatibility with the listed fire-door assembly |
EN 16034 is used with a relevant product standard, such as EN 13241 for industrial, commercial and garage doors, where its scope applies. The exact route depends on the product and intended use. A CE mark without the relevant declared fire performance is not proof that a shutter is approved for a particular rated opening.
Why ratings do not translate one-for-one
The test methods, pressure conditions, classification rules, and certification arrangements differ. An EN classification such as E 60 or EI 60 is not a 60-minute UL listing, and a UL hour rating is not an EN classification. A project may need separate test evidence and certification work to serve both markets.
The term “UL certified” is also too broad by itself. Ask for the specific model, product category, fire-test standard, hourly rating, maximum size, guide/anchor arrangement, operator, release system, and label. The UL guide identifies rolling steel fire doors under UL 10B. It identifies certain positive-pressure-tested swinging fire doors under UL 10C. An operator’s UL 325 certification does not establish the fire rating of the complete shutter.
Export-project checklist
- Identify the destination, installation location, opening function, and adopted building/fire code or applicable EU product route.
- Ask the buyer or design professional for the required rating, smoke performance, clear dimensions, and operator/release sequence.
- Obtain the complete assembly’s certification and installation instructions for the exact size and configuration offered.
- For an EU project, confirm the applicable harmonised specifications, Declaration of Performance, notified-body role, and CE marking with a qualified certification specialist.
- For a US project, have the design professional and AHJ check whether the proposed listing satisfies the local code. Do not assume CE documents alone establish code acceptance.

Frequently asked questions
Is a CE-marked fire shutter automatically accepted in the United States?
No. The AHJ evaluates compliance with the adopted code and accepted listing or alternative evidence. CE documentation does not automatically establish that compliance.
Is CE marking for fire doors only a manufacturer’s self-declaration?
No. The manufacturer issues a Declaration of Performance, but fire/smoke compartmentation products can require System 1 assessment and a notified product certification body under the applicable EU construction-product route.
Does every rolling steel fire shutter need UL 10C?
No. UL’s application guide lists rolling steel fire doors under UL 10B. Verify the exact listing and adopted code for the project.
Can an EN 1634-1 test report be converted into a UL hour rating?
No automatic conversion exists. The product needs evidence accepted by the destination project’s code and AHJ.
