Not sure which fire rated roller shutter to buy? You’re not alone in wondering which one is actually worth buying. The short answer: judge the build, the fire-resistance duration, and the controls — not the sales pitch. Here’s how to sort it out.
Fire shutter structure
A fire rated roller shutter works with its frame to hold back fire for a set time. Think of it as a movable fire divider. A vertical shutter rolls up into the head box above the opening. When a fire breaks out, it drops and seals the opening to stop the fire from spreading. You’ll see these set around escalators, at the edge of an atrium where each floor meets a corridor, in lobbies, in rooms, and anywhere a firewall divider is needed.
Fire shutter parts
The curtain runs on a set of standard parts. There’s the curtain plate, the seat plate, the guide rail, the bracket, the shaft, and the head box. Then you have the control box, the motor, the limiter, the lintel, the manual quick-release, the button switch, and the safety device. On top of that, linked devices do the real work in an emergency: smoke and heat detectors, plus the fire link system.
Fire rating classes
The fire-resistance duration is the number that matters. An ordinary steel shutter holds back fire for up to 2.0 hours. A composite steel shutter goes up to 3.0 hours. A premium shutter reaches 4.0 hours. One thing to note: an ordinary steel shutter used as a fire divider needs sprinkler protection behind it.
Control operation
Here’s how the shutter actually behaves when it counts.
Auto. After the detector acts, a divider shutter drops straight to the bottom in link mode. A shutter on an escape path drops to 1.8 m above the floor first, then drops the rest of the way once a heat detector acts.
Mechanical. Grab the chain and pull the shutter-side lock chain down — the shutter descends. Pull the other side and it rises.
Manual. Open the box on either side or nearby. Press “up” (or the triangle) to roll up, “down” to descend, and the middle to stop. Or head to the fire control room and press the manual key for the module that drives the shutter down. When it’s in place, it sends feedback back to the room.
Where to install a fire rated roller shutter
The rule is simple: where two fire zones meet and there’s no firewall, you set a fire rated roller shutter. That usually means a few spots.
Enclosed escape stairs leading to a corridor, and enclosed elevator lobbies leading to anterooms and then to the corridor.
Check doors on cable, pipe, smoke, and trash shafts.
Doors on firewalls and partition walls that divide fire zones. When a firewall or fire door is hard to fit, use a fire rated roller shutter with water curtain protection.
