How to Buy a Steel Fire Rated Roller Shutter

RHIDOOR’s fire rated roller shutter line splits by curtain build into ordinary steel and composite steel. The ordinary type uses a single steel plate; the composite type uses two plates with insulation between them. Where the shutter stands in for a firewall rated over 3 hours, you can drop the water curtain. As a rule, only garage lanes may use the ordinary steel type; every other opening needs a premium fire shutter.

When you learn how to buy steel fire rated roller shutter units, start with the curtain build, then check the unit against the sample.

Fire Rated Roller Shutter Material Types

The ordinary steel fire rated shutter uses a steel curtain plate, rail, seat plate, lintel, and housing, with motor and control box, rated for fire integrity.

The inorganic fiber composite uses an inorganic fiber curtain with steel splints, rail, seat plate, lintel, and housing, plus motor and control box, rated for fire integrity.

The premium fire shutter uses a steel or inorganic fiber curtain with steel rail, seat plate, splints, lintel, and housing, plus motor and control box. It meets integrity, insulation, and smoke control, and it can roll left or right.

Fire ratings run by duration:

  • Steel fire shutter: 1.5 hours
  • Inorganic fiber composite: 2 hours
  • Premium fire shutter: 3 hours

How to Pick a Steel Fire Rated Shutter

Check the surface. A sound steel fire rated shutter shows firm, even weld spots and a flat, smooth spray finish. At the marked inspection point it carries the product, quality-pass, and certification marks. A poor unit welds roughly, has uneven spots, a coarse finish, and misses the marks. Look for a complete body with no damage, no score marks, burrs, or hammer marks, and tight, flat seams at the corners.

Check the dimensions against the approved sample. The outer size must not exceed the sample, the leaf thickness and frame side width must meet or exceed it, and any fire glass must match the sample size and thickness—never smaller. A substandard unit runs larger in outline, thinner in leaf, and smaller in glass.

Check the fire seal strip. A qualified steel or inorganic fire shutter carries a straight seal strip—not arched—backed by a test report from a recognized lab. A bad one has no strip, an arched strip, or no report.

Where Steel Works Best

Steel is a sound choice where the metal holds up. It is hard to break, carries strong fire resistance, and rolls away to take no floor space. Steel still has limits. It corrodes in acid or alkali, so keep it out of those environments. Thin steel also dents or takes hits it will not spring back from, which makers note in their care guides.

RHIDOOR laid out the steel fire rated shutter material, care, and acceptance points so you can tell a good unit from a poor one. We supply steel fire rated shutters with a 15-day lead time and an MOQ of 1 pc, and we provide on-site guidance, not just a product.
