What You Can't Ignore When Buying a Crystal Rolling Door for Your Store

Crystal rolling doors are a big investment for a retail storefront. Here's what to pay attention to, from someone who has installed a lot of them.

Frame Material

The frame holds everything together. Most crystal doors use aluminum alloy or stainless steel for the frame. Stainless steel is stronger and more corrosion-resistant, but it costs more. Aluminum is lighter and cheaper but can deform under impact. For the frame thickness, 2.0mm stainless steel or 3.0mm aluminum is the minimum I'd recommend for a storefront that sees daily use.

Polycarbonate Panel Quality

Not all polycarbonate is the same. Brand matters. Good brands (Lexan, Makrolon) use virgin polycarbonate with UV stabilizers. Cheap panels use recycled material that yellows and becomes brittle after a year or two in sunlight. Ask what brand of polycarbonate the manufacturer uses. If they won't tell you, that's a red flag.

Panel Thickness

Standard crystal door panels are 8 to 12mm thick. For high-traffic areas or wider panels, go thicker. A 12mm panel is noticeably more rigid than an 8mm one. The cost difference per square meter isn't huge, but the durability difference is.

Sealing

Crystal doors should seal well against dust and water. Check the bottom seal design. A rubber bulb seal that compresses against the floor works best. The side seals where the panels meet the frame should have brush strips or rubber gaskets. If wind blows through your closed door, you'll lose air conditioning and let in dust.

Locking System

A crystal door needs more than just a motor brake for security. Look for multi-point locking. When the door closes, bolts should engage at multiple points along the frame, not just in the center. A three-point or five-point lock is standard on good crystal doors.

Installation

The track alignment is critical for crystal doors. If the tracks aren't perfectly parallel, the panels will bind and the door will run rough. The installer needs to be precise. Ask how many crystal doors the installation team has done. Crystal doors are less forgiving than regular metal rolling doors.

Price Range

In Shenzhen, budget 500 to 2500 yuan per square meter for a crystal rolling door. The wide range reflects frame material, polycarbonate brand, panel thickness, and locking hardware. A mid-range door with aluminum frame, 10mm brand-name polycarbonate, and three-point locking will run you about 1200 to 1500 yuan per square meter installed.
